DEAF / HARD-OF-HEARING SERVICES
Advocates for Access provides workshops, social events and communication assistance specifically for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HOH) Community.
Our Deaf and Hard of Hearing Advocate will create a preferred interpreter card for any member of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community with the specific contact information of the interpreters with whom the individual prefers to work. This card then enables the consumer to quickly communicate their need for an interpreter when setting appointments or requesting services from the community. Our Deaf and Hard of Hearing Advocate also works to maintain an updated interpreter list of qualified interpreters who are registered with the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission. This list may be accessed through our website or can be faxed upon request to anyone in need of hiring an interpreter.

Assistive Technology and Free Amplified Phones
Illinois Telecommunication Access Corporation (ITAC) administers a program to ensure equal access to communication for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. Through the use of a voucher program, anyone who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing can obtain a free TTY, CapTel or amplified phone. Advocates for Access serves as a selection site for these phones.
An application, available through our center, must be filled out completely and the consumer must try the phones and choose the one that works best with his or her individual hearing loss. Please contact us if you are interested in learning more about this free opportunity.

Deaf Advisory Committee (DAC)
As an advocate for the Deaf community, the Deaf Advisory Committee (DAC) acts as a sounding board for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals to share community concerns. The DAC helps educate the Deaf and Hard of Hearing on community resources and activities by offering various workshops and events in Peoria, Fulton, Woodford, and Tazewell counties. Through the DAC, disability awareness is shared throughout the Deaf and hearing communities, which results in a better understanding across cultures.
Open Caption Movies
Advocates for Access partners with Goodrich Willow Knolls 14 Theatres to bring open captioned movies to Peoria.
