COMMUNITY SERVICES
ASL Class
American Sign Language is the third most used language in the United States. It is a native language for people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. More and more states are now recognizing American Sign Language as a foreign language and will be taught in schools. It is also encouraged for babies to learn sign before they learn to speak.
Advocates for Access offers beginning American Sign Language classes. In the class, students will learn the basic conversational signs. The best way to learn to sign is to be interactive rather than learn it directly from the book. The class runs for 6 weeks, meeting once per week. There’s a fee involved in taking the class that includes the book and class rate.
For more information, please contact our Deaf and Hard of Hearing Advocate.
Accessibility Audits
Since the passage of ADA, Environmental Barriers Act (EBA), and the Illinois Accessibility Code, new construction, additions, and renovations of both publicly and privately owned facilities are required to be accessible. To meet this requirement, our center provides onsite accessibility audits of facilities upon business request.
Onsite Accessibility Audits of private and publicly owned facilities are provided upon request.
Public Education/Outreach
The center provides information to the community on independent living issues and concerns affecting persons with disabilities through presentations, workshops, a newsletter, a website and other use of media.
Disability Awareness Presentations
Advocates for Access staff can provide disability awareness presentations and sensitivity training to schools, businesses, civic organizations, health care professionals, and others to educate about disability related issues, break down stereotypes and promote inclusion.
